Google Ads vs Meta Ads: Which One Should You Run?

This is one of the most common questions we hear from local business owners. Should you run Google Ads, Meta Ads, or both?

There is no single right answer. But after running ads for our own business and for many local service clients, we have learned a lot about how each platform behaves. Let’s break it down in plain terms.

The Short Answer

Google Ads tend to bring higher quality leads, but they cost more. Meta Ads, which run on Facebook and Instagram, tend to bring more leads overall, but many of them are not ready to buy yet.

Neither one is better in every case. It depends on your budget, your website, and what kind of customer you are trying to reach.

How Google Ads Work

Google Ads show up when someone types a search, like “roof repair near me” or “ceramic coating for my car.” That person is already looking for what you sell. They have intent.

The good parts of Google Ads:

  • People searching are often ready to buy
  • Leads tend to be more serious
  • Great for big ticket services people actively search for

The tough parts of Google Ads:

  • Cost per click is usually higher
  • You often need a bigger budget to compete, especially in busy markets
  • Your website needs to be strong, or you will waste money fast

How Meta Ads Work

Meta Ads show up while someone is scrolling Facebook or Instagram. They are not searching for your service. You are interrupting their feed and asking them to pay attention.

The good parts of Meta Ads:

  • Lower cost per click in most cases
  • You can get a lot of leads quickly
  • Great for building brand awareness and getting your name out there

The tough parts of Meta Ads:

  • Many leads are just browsing, not ready to buy
  • You will get more price shoppers and tire kickers
  • Lead quality is usually lower overall

What We Learned Running Our Own Ads

Before Wright Agency, we ran our own auto detailing business. We tried both platforms ourselves.

When we ran Meta Ads on Facebook and Instagram, we got a steady flow of messages. The problem was that a lot of those messages were people just asking about price. Many were not serious. We spent a good amount of time chasing leads that never turned into real jobs.

Then we switched our focus to Google Ads. Our budget had to roughly double just to compete for clicks in our area. But something changed. The leads coming in were different. These were people who had already decided they wanted ceramic coating. Many of them were ready to spend $1,500 or more without much back and forth.

That difference taught us something important. More leads is not always better. Fewer, more serious leads can be worth a lot more to your business.

The One Thing People Forget

Here is something we see business owners overlook all the time. None of this works well if your website is weak.

If you run Google Ads and send people to a slow, confusing, or outdated website, they will click and then leave right away. That is called a bounce, and it burns through your ad budget fast with nothing to show for it.

A strong website does a few important jobs:

  • Loads fast on phones
  • Clearly explains what you offer
  • Makes it easy to call, message, or book
  • Builds trust with real photos and clear information

If your website cannot do these things, you are better off fixing that first before spending heavily on ads.

So Which One Should You Run?

Here is a simple way to think about it:

If you want…Consider…
Fast, serious leads for a higher priced serviceGoogle Ads
A larger volume of leads and more brand awarenessMeta Ads
The best of bothA mix, with a strong website backing both up

Many of our clients end up running both, once their budget allows. Google Ads brings in the ready to buy customers. Meta Ads keeps the pipeline full and builds recognition in the community over time.

The Bottom Line

Google Ads usually bring fewer, higher quality leads at a higher cost. Meta Ads usually bring more leads at a lower cost, but with more price shopping mixed in.

Neither platform is a magic fix. The real key is matching the right platform to your goals, your budget, and most importantly, having a website strong enough to turn those clicks into real customers.

If you are not sure which path makes sense for your business, we are happy to walk through it with you.
